Ernie and I have been riding on our dirt road frequently. The road is covered with not-so-crushed rocks that hurt Ernie’s feet. We continue riding on the road even though it’s not comfortable for Ernie because it’s quick and convenient, and it’s what we know.

Overgrown

I’ve been spending a lot of time cleaning up pastures these past few weeks. Wild raspberries, vines, dogwoods, small trees have all twisted themselves around the fences that will soon (hopefully!) contain horses. I know that I won’t be able to clear the entangled masses completely before the horses move. This will be an ongoing, laborious process. Continue reading

A Season of Preparation

There’s a lot of preparation going on at the Funny Farm these days. Repairing fences. Moving gates. Pulling weeds and downed electric fence wires. Burning brush and tree limbs. Buying hay, saws and (gasp!) a tractor. My body aches from all of the work. I’m preparing for a very special homecoming later this month. Ernie is finally coming home. Continue reading

Ernie has a ritual. Every time I return him to the pasture after a ride, he drops to his knees, then onto his side and wiggles back and forth, rolls onto his back, and grinds dirt into his hair and skin. So much for the grooming I did prior to the ride! He’s dirty once again, just like all the other horses in the pasture. Continue reading
